Description:
The 1946 Vancouver built MASTER GEORGE, owned by E.Pontikos of Greece, is seen passing Gravesend on 17th April 1969, outward from London.
History per fortships.tripod.com/Royal%20Navy.htm:
Original projected name TREVOSE HEAD. Work suspended before completion. Sold and converted to merchant ship.
In total, twenty-one maintenance ships were ordered from Canadian shipbuilders for use by the Royal Navy. Sixteen 'Victory' type vessels were completed by West Coast shipbuilders but as the war ended, the orders for the final five ships were cancelled.
These five vessels, this ship MULL OF OA (which was launched as TREVOSE HEAD), Rattray Head, Orfordness, Selsey Bill and Tarbet Ness were completed as merchant ships and, as they had been built to a high specification, found a ready market as cargo liners. All these maintenance ships were owned by the Royal Navy but two were later transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy.
1946: delivered to Iran Nav. Co. Ltd. Tehran, Iran, as TURAN
1948: sold to Cia Argentina de Pesca S.A., Buenos Aires, and renamed BETTY RYAN
Sold in 1967 to E.Pontikos, taking the name MASTER GEORGE
Later: holed in the engine room on 25.6.70 during a voyage from Genoa to Havana, beached at San Salvador Island on 27.6.70, abandoned by crew
MASTER GEORGE finally arrived at Castellon on 16.11.74 for breaking as JORGE
