Description:

The Astra Carriers of Lugano's lengthened Liberty Ship NERVION is seen passing Hochdonn on the Kiel Canal westbound on 16th July 1969 from Wismar to Rouen after discharging a cargo of grain from San Nicolas (Arg.)

Built at New Orleans late in 1943 as the Z-ET1-S-C3 type tanker EUGENE W.HILGARD, she was employed during 1944/5 by the U.S.Navy as WHIPPET and between 1951/5 by Hilgard Tanker Corporation of Wilmington, Delaware.

Purchased in 1955 by John Theo. Vatis of Piraeus, she was renamed LOIDA, converted into a dry cargo ship and then lengthened to 150.2 metres.

She was purchased by her Swiss principals in 1965 and, managed by Acomarit, operated as NERVION until finally arriving at Kaohsiung on 8th April 1971 for breaking.
