Description:

29/01/2019, I have now established, from an older aerial photograph, that this location is the western lock entrance to the Royal Albert and King George V Royal Docks.

ADMINS:
1) If this photo is not to acceptable standards I will delete it.
2) As I was not familiar with all the London docks, I am trying to establish if this is indeed Tilbury, or entering one of the Royal Docks. Confirmation sought please.

1961 or 1962, Tilbury Dock(?), Essex, England.

The Dutch freighter enters the dock guided by the tug 'Sun XV'.
To the right, a berthed P&O passenger cargo vessel can be seen, it is either the 'Cathay' or 'Chitral'.

Amerskerk:
Launched on 23/08/1952 and completed at the shipyard during December 1952, by Howaldtswerke, Germany (876)
8,582 g.t. and 12,410 dwt., as:
'Amerskerk' to 1972 and
'Liberty Manufacturer' until sold for demolition to Taiwan, arriving at Kaohsiung on 19/05/1973.

Scanned from a slide, with the permission of Dave Petchey.

The funnel marking is that of Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschapppij (United Netherlands Navigation Co), one of the Dutch shipping companies merged into the Nedlloyd group. The VNSM funnel marking was that adopted by Nedlloyd

With those funnel colours, did that company ? eventually become Nedlloyd ?

Presumably taken from another ship - berthed by what is now the turning taxiway at London City Airport.

What looks like P&O's CHITRAL to the right.

This is the King George V dock. The large building to the right of the vessel is the former Harland and Wolff London ship repair facility.
