Description:

Ilmari Tuuli of Helsinki's J.L.Thompson, Sunderland, built SOMERI, delivered in December 1939 as ARGYLL for B.J.Sutherland & Co. Ltd. of Newcastle, who had sold the ship to Finland in 1954, was photographed eastbound on the Kiel Canal passing Hochdonn on 21st July 1969 on a voyage from Benisaf to Gdynia.

Between 1940 and 1943 she had been operated as SAINT HENRI by the French Vichy Government, see:

http://www.searlecanada.org/sunderland/sunderland088.html

Neil Porter advises that, along with five other vessels, ARGYLL was captured by Vichy French naval units either at or off Dakar, Senegal, on Jul. 5, 1940, allegedly in retaliation for the Jul. 3, 1940 Royal Navy attacks on the French fleet at Oran & Mers el Kébir, in French Algeria. She was recaptured by the Allies in May 1943.

EX-INKERI NURMINEN-67 EX-ARGYLL-54

SOMERI finally arrived at Sveti Kajo, near Split, on 26th December 1971 for breaking.
