Description:

The port side of foredeck of British India S.N. Co's passenger/cargo ship “Santhia”, taken at sea in July 1966. Her last voyage before sale was a cargo-only one from Australia to Calcutta; at Fremantle 1,006 live sheep were loaded for discharge at Singapore.

Hi, Paul. That mode of transport for sheep for short voyages was common in those days (these days it's not much better). As to your question: 1,006 were loaded at Fremantle; 3 died & were committed to the deep during the 4-day voyage to Singapore, where 1,002 were counted off. The discrepancy of 1 was probably due to the excellent lamb curry the crew served us en route
