Description:
Stationary training ship “Viking” at Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden, on 29th May 1969
Owner: City of Gothenburg (Association Viking?)
Builder: Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen
Gross tons: 2,952
Length: 293.81 m
Completed July 1906 as training ship “Viking” for den Danske Handelsflaadens Skoleskib for Befalningsmænd (the Danish Schoolship Association)
Laid up at outbreak of war in 1914
Sold May 1915 or 1916 (sources differ) to det Forenede Dampskips-Selskab (United Steamship Co.), Copenhagen, resumed service as a training ship
Sold early 1929 to the famous Captain Gustaf Erikson, Mariehamn, Åland Islands, Finland & used in the Australian grain trade.
After Erikson's death in 1947, was sold in 1950 to the City of Gothenburg (in a source I found around 1970 the official owner was listed as “Association Viking”). Although 2 other photos on this website are in the “museum ship” category, the only (skimpy) sources I can find indications that she was used at least some of the time as a maritime training school and as a home for various shipping organizations” (Wikepedia); no references to a museum.
She now operates at the Hotell Barken Viking under the ownership of ESS Hotell AB
