Description:

One of the most costly failures in shipbuilding could be this dredger, that was built by the RSV-Verolme yard in the early eighties. It could "walk" by moving the 8 black pillars up and down to get to the dredging area,as well as sail in a normal way. The large dredging arm can be partly seen at the other end of the ship. The ship was duly completed but laid up at the then new Maasvlakte area. Due to the very distressed dredging market at the time it never found a commercial job and was finally sold for scrap to Taiwan. (31000 LWT). The ship was generally known as the Camel, because of her walking capabilities.

1988 could have been the year, she remained at Maasvlakte for a long time until Volker Stevin gave up.

Some more pics here, which probably show her departure for scrap (was she scrapped in '88 indeed?): https://www.dredgepoint.org/dredging-database/equipment/simon-stevin-0
