Decommissioned March 27, 2003, the ex-USS Paul F. Foster (DD-964) was assigned to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division and renamed SDTS EDD-964 (Self Defense Test Ship). Used to test new technologies and weapons systems in as close to a real-world environment as possible. Given computerized navigation and engineering systems, the ship can be remotely controlled to avoid putting human lives in jeopardy when being shot at. She is the last remaining of the 31 Spruance class Destroyers built between 1972 and 1983. All her sister ships have been scrapped or sunk as targets upon decommissioning.
