The US Navy classifies these ships as LCS (Littoral Combat Ships). The US Navy likes having new "sexy" names for things to try and help get votes in congress to fund items. This is a classification that is really not used that much anywhere else. Since the US Navy is looking at new "Frigates" that have more combat power than these, IMHO the Corvette designation is good for them. That or Patrol Forces. If you go by size however, they are larger than many current frigates and even World War II Destroyers. And to confuse it even worse, they are name (mostly) after cities - and that used to be a cruiser or attack submarine naming route.
