Description:

Ben Line's 1968 Scotstoun built BENCRUACHAN is seen passing Hoek van Holland, outbound from Rotterdam, on 21st June 1970 during a voyage from Hamburg to Kobe.

She finally arrived at Kaohsiung for breaking in May 1980.

She was a steamship so expensive to run and was obsolete in the design/cargo carrying sense, and effectively was so even when she was built.

Interesting, Michael.
I had understood that it was because scrap prices were high - and they were all requiring expensive Special Survey about the same time. Thinking of it, both could be true.

There were always other reasons than beeing old and tired reasons for scrapping ships.
May it be no more work, to costly to maintain, ...

In 1968 nearly all surviving liberty ships (and many other steamers) were scrapped in one year because of a change in insurance policies.

Her funnels reminds me of those on passenger ship/cruiser CANBERREA.
