Ben Line's 1968 Scotstoun built BENCRUACHAN is seen passing Hoek van Holland, outbound from Rotterdam, on 21st June 1970 during a voyage from Hamburg to Kobe.
She finally arrived at Kaohsiung for breaking in May 1980.

I had understood that it was because scrap prices were high - and they were all requiring expensive Special Survey about the same time. Thinking of it, both could be true.

May it be no more work, to costly to maintain, ...
In 1968 nearly all surviving liberty ships (and many other steamers) were scrapped in one year because of a change in insurance policies.
