Hello Emmanuel,

the name refers to an island that (even as the ship was named) a long time ago belonged to Denmark and Sweden:

https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dag%C3%B8

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiiumaa

And especially in Denmark the people have absolutely no sense of humor when it comes to land and territory.

They won't let you buy a piece of land or a house and even prohibit hoisting another flag than their Dannebrog.

That was the case a few years ago but I think things haven't changed. Correct me when I'm wrong!

So the name is no surprise and I would not be suprised if was still in use today every now and then.

Best regards,

Michael.

P.S. I really like Denmark and it's people and always had a great time there - only to avoid any misunderstandings!

Nowadays I think it would have been politically incorrect to use that name. But those were other times.

Hello Arne, hello miraflores,

thank you very much for the quick identification of ships and location!

Another slide in the wrong box ... perhaps thats why I didn't recognise the steel structure as the Hochdonn high bridge.

This changes the photographer and the date to sometime between 1949 and 1954 - most likely 1949/50.

Best regards,

Michael.

Hello Michael,
some info about the vessel:

I'm sure the location the pic was taken is the Kiel canal ferry station Hochdonn.
