This vessel is the fourth of the "Henry J. Kaiser" class of oil tankers, built for the United States Navy. As of 1996, it remained a reserve until 2009 when the transfer process to the Chilean Navy began, officially joining on February 10, 2010, to be renamed "Almirante Montt", with the objective of to replenish the navy units on the high seas, replacing the old oil tanker "Araucano", discharged after 43 years of service.

After going through a reconditioning period in the US port of Mobile, he arrived in the country in April 2010.

The "Almirante Montt", with its 42 thousand tons of displacement under full load, is the largest one that has served in the Institution, surpassing the battleship "Almirante Latorre", operated by the national navy between 1920 and 1958.
