The Frigate "Captain Prat" was built between 1981 and 1984 in the Royal Schelde Shipyards of Holland, being commissioned on July 17, 1986 with the name of HNLMS "Witte de With" to the Royal Navy of the Netherlands, where He served for more than 19 years, serving missions in the Persian Gulf, in the Balkan War and as part of different task forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The Unit was transferred to the Chilean Navy on July 17, 2006, at the Den Helder Naval Base, being the third Dutch frigate to join the Institution as part of the "Puente II" surface vessel renovation project. His first Commander was, at that time, Frigate Captain Felipe García-Huidobro.
Together with its twin ship, the FFG-14 “Almirante Latorre”, they form the basis of the National Air Force's anti-aircraft defense. In addition, its equipment also allows it to fulfill different roles for the defense of Chilean sovereignty at sea.
It is the fourth Unit of the Chilean Navy to bear the name of the maximum naval hero, Comandante Arturo Prat Chacón
