Indeed the new locks which can handle now ships up to 19 containers wide, i.e. 49 meters. I believe there has already been a test transit of a containership with 20 containers abeam, as you can see in the picture there is still space for another container.
They just use rubber fenders, though quite small ones, hence the damages that occurs to ships from time to time.

For sure new locks.
But wondering is that fendering in the lock on port side or are this vacuumsystem for berthing?
