28/07/1942 BARBACENA was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-155 (Adolf Cornelius Piening) whilst on a voyage from Santo - Recife - Port of Spain, Trinidad and New York with a cargo of 5,000 tons of general cargo, including coffee, castor seed, dried beans and caroa fibre. Six of her crew were killed.
