Description:

FNS L'ASTROLABE stuck in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, on Friday, 22 November 2019. Her missions to the French territories in Antarctica this summer have been seriously affected after she experienced propeller problems which require dry-docking. It was at first thought she would have to be towed to Fremantle, but the latest news is that she will go to Fremantle under her own power. She has been in Hobart for at least a couple of weeks.

It was reported in the press today that 'unusual wear of the bearing of the shaft lines' was discovered during a routine inspection by divers. The vessel can sail safely in the open seas but there may be risk when operating in sea ice conditions. The vessel will leave Hobart at the end of this week and go into dry dock in Fremantle, Western Australia, shortly.

Do they know how it happened? Such a shame for the French Antarctic peoples though. She was meant to be picking up people who have spent all winter in Antarctica.
