I (probably) saw the same ship lying on 04.08.1996 in Rotterdam. At the bow the name TAIS can be read in small letters (tais).

Originally built as one of a sizeable class (Project P801 and P801A) of non-propelled, floating barracks, for the Russian Navy.
The exact number built is presently unknown to me.

They were constructed at two of Valmet's yards:
'Valmet Helsingin Telakka', Helsinki, Finland and
'Valmetin Laivateollisuus' Pansio, Turku, Finland.

I have been through an incomplete fleet list and am unable to say which unit this one was.

Some general data below:

1st series - 8 units in 1962-63, 2nd series - 21 units in 1963-72, 3rd series since 1971, 5th series - 2 units in 1983.

Standard displacement: 2439 t (3rd series), 2500 t (5th series)
Full displacement: 3578 t (3rd series), 3573 t (5th series)
Length: 110.99 m
Width: 13, 84 m
Draft: 2.82 m
Autonomy: 30 days
Powerplant: 3 diesel engines of 350 kW
Passenger capacity: 330-400 people (3rd series - 334, 5th series - 394)
Crew: 40 people.
