Description:

European Navigation Inc. (Capt. S.Karnessis & Mrs.D.Vlassakis) of Piraeus, represented in London by Elka Shipping (London) Ltd, had in 1985 purchased Blue Funnel Line's 1976 Kherson built 1585E Dnepr type LYCAON.

She had been laid up on the River Tyne from 9th May 1984 and one year later was reportedly sold to be renamed CHRYSOVALANDOU FAITH.

However she sailed from Hamburg on 8th June 1985 for Bandar Abbas as ELEFTHERIA K. In this photograph she is seen departing from Liverpool on the summer evening of Sunday 16th August 1987 bound for Peru; she returned to Liverpool in December 1987 and continued trading for another decade until beached at Alang on 13th April 1998 for breaking.

Pieter, that's an interesting question. As the name CHRYSOVALANDOU FAITH is reported in Miramar but not in Lloyd's Confidential Indexes, I suspect that she may have been renamed but only while lying on the River Tyne, sailing from there as ELEFTHERIA K. I will ask a Tyneside contact if he knows the answer.

Just a further question, did she ever carry the name Chrysovalandou Faith, or only on paper?

Great shot and commentary. Capt Spyros Karnessis, before setting up Elka Shipping in London in 1980, was working for Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Ltd, London, the London branch of Thenamaris Maritime Inc, Greece. His fleet growth was impressive in the years to come, as he was active in all segments namely from chip wood carriers to capesize bulkers and from small product tankers to VLCCs.
