Description:

Schulte & Bruns of Emden’s 1938 Hamburg built ore carrier CAROLA SCHULTE, which had been converted from a tanker between November 1955 and March 1956 at Hamburg, was photographed eastbound in the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel on 22nd June 1971.

EX-SOUTHERN ATLANTIC-55 (South Georgia Co Ltd, Leith) EX-NORD ATLANTIC-48 (John T.Essberger, Hamburg)

She had arrived at Vigo in August 1939 with a cargo of 5633 tons of gas oil, 4470 tons of gasoline and 4500 tons of lubricating oil for the Kriegsmarine. On 5.8.1943 she was moved to El Ferrol and beached as a blockade runner. After the end of the War, in a damaged condition, she was towed to Portsmouth in October 1946 and put into use by the British Ministry of Transport, managed by Hadley Shipping, before being purchased in November 1948 by C.Salvesen.

Following nine months laid up at Emden she finally arrived at Bilbao under tow on 18.9.72 for breaking.
