Description:
Primal Shipmanagement's 1986 Imabari built 150m type bulk carrier VERTIGO is seen arriving at Liverpool on 22nd May 2008 (my 60th birthday) to load a cargo of scrap metal.
By 1981 an extended new building programme had enabled the well known Greek shipowner N.D. Papalios to build up a fleet of 76 ships totalling 1.8m deadweight tonnes but a reluctance to resell his vessels for further trading, while continuing to place building contracts in the falling market, unfortunately led to the collapse of his Aegis Shipping in 1985. A grandson, Nicholas G.Papalios, had in 1997 joined Primal Shipmanagement, a family business which had managed several bulk carriers given “primal”, names such as Player, Frantic and Vertigo (all this same ship), Insomnia and Catch 22. More obscure names included Django - a Romany term meaning "I awake" – and Moneyball - management using business analytics.
