Description:
Seen on 18th July 2020, lying in her final resting place in a creek in what is now known as the Mutton Cove Conservation Reserve, where she was abandoned in 1945. The area is tidal with a tidal range of just over 2 metres on spring tides, and the photo was taken just on high water.
Built in Dundee, Scotland in 1897 the steamship Excelsior spent her working life in South Pacific and Australian waters before being acquired by the South Australian Harbours Board in 1933 for use as a coal hulk. The Excelsior is the most easily accessible and most visible of the 40 vessels that were abandoned in the waterways of the Port Adelaide area in the first half of the 20th century.
