Description:

A Japanese Maritime Self Defence force Yūshio-class submarine alongside at her builder, Kawasaki Heavy Industries' Kobe yard, 5th April 1984
Displacement: c.2,250 tonnes (surfaced)
Length: 76.0 m
Propulsion: diesel-electric; 3,400 s.h.p. surfaced, 7,200 s.h.p. submerged
Speed: 12 knots surfaced, 20 knots submerged
Complement: 75-80
The class comprised 10 vessels, evenly split between Kawasaki and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe yard, commissioned between February 1980 & March 1989, and decommissioned between March 1999 & April 2006.
She is most likely one of the earlier Kawasaki-built vessels (“Mochishio” [SS-574; commissioned 5th March 5 1981] or “Okishio” [SS-576, commissioned 1st March 1983]) in for routine docking. She was not the “Hamashio” (SS-578, launched at this yard on February 1, 1984) as she was in in the yard's floating dock at the time of this photo.
