The Navy has arrested a French-registered fishing vessel this afternoon 60 nautical miles south west of Mizen Head in west Cork.
The AR VAG II was arrested for fishing in an area designated for the protection of deep water coral where fishing is prohibited.
The arrest was carried out by the LÉ Aisling, which is escorting the trawler to Castletownbere.
This is the first arrest of a fishing boat under legislation introduced following EU recommendations for the creation of special areas of conservation around the coast.
Underwater coral areas were only discovered off the Irish coast in the past few years.
