Description:

Polish Ocean Lines' 1962 Loire-Normandie, Grand Quevilly, built NORWID is seen arriving at Avonmouth exactly fifty years ago today, on 5th September 1970.

Exactly fifty years, very nice ;)

Seeing this picture, I asked myself, what coat of arms is painted on the stem.
It would be quite natural for ships bearing the name of a city, but this one is named after poet Cyprian Kamil Norwid (by some critics considered the 4th greatest of polish poets).
The best idea I have, is that it is Gdynia city's coat of arms - "Norwid's" home port and owner's head office location - shown in some early form.
Similar case might be "Generał Sikorski" with crest of home port Gdańsk.


Anyway, (not that precisely) forty five years ago, in summer 1975, "Norwid" carried members of scientific expedition to South America, organized by natural history students of Jagiellonian University:
