Description:

The ex British India ship is almost certainly ex CHANDPARA of 1949 which was sold to Jebshun of Hong kong in 10.70 and renamed PRECIOUS RUBY. Under this name she grounded on 28.3.71 near Dalian and sustained damage which was deemed to be beyond economical repair. She was sold to breakers in Dalian in 10.71 but is seen here in Dalian in 1974. The plain black funnel suggests that she was put in service by the Chinese in domestic trade. The apparently grey hull is a puzzle, however, since these ships normally had black hulls. No name is visible.

Behind her and almost completely hidden is an ex Ellerman ship, almost certainly the ex 1949 built CITY OF LIVERPOOL that arrived at Shanghai in 2.73 for breaking whilst called KAVO GROSSOS.

Her all black funnel again suggests that she was working on Chinese domestic services.

The Chinese names for both of these ships is not know.

The only other BI C-class ship to end up with the Chinese was the CHANTALA which went for breaking as KOTA SENTOSA. She still had her vents at this late stage.

Arcane detail maybe, but it might solve the matter. The C-class ships all had directional ventilation cowls on the tops of all the samson posts (kingposts), including at both ends of No.3 hatch (aft of the accommodation). From photos I've collected of her in BI days, Chandpara did also have these cowls on every samson post early on, but one photo I have (unfortunately undated but must be in later days) shows that they have been removed on the 2 posts aft of the accommodation (forward end of No.3 Hatch), the same as your (Graham) photo shows. So (unless they were also removed on others of the class, of which I cannot find any examples in my collection) then it must be ex-Chandpara

This is hard to describe, but BI ships had unusual cylindrical units on their kingposts that I assume were vents. Some vessels had the ones on the kingposts immediately aft of the bridge removed and the ship in the photo lacks them. CHANTALA had hers even whilst trading as KOTA SENTOSA. An arcane detail, I know!
KOTA SENTOSA would have had a black hull. The aft boat may have been removed for repair or maybe the Chinese used smaller crews on ships trading in their home waters.

Sometime in 1974. The photo was undated, but by studying the histories of other ships in the photo (this is just a part of one), the year could be narrowed down to 1974. I think it's very cold in Dalian in winter - my guess that this was in the spring, summer or autumn months.

Graham - do you know whether this this a real 1/1/1974 or the site's "sometime in 1974"?

CHANDPARA's IMO number was 5067962. She was the only post-WW2 BI C-class sold for demolition in China before 1974, but Laxon & Perry's comprehensive volume on BI ships states that the demolition work "was effected in October" (1971, at Dairen/Dalian) but of course their source could be wrong. The CHINDWARA was the only other sold for scrapping in China (at Tiensin), in August 1974, but Laxon & Perry gives no date for completion. In her BI days she had additional lifeboats on either side of the forward accommodation block which the ship in this photo does not
