Description:

From my Grandfathers Navy photo album handed down. Taken in Malta in I think 1937 (corrected to 1927) when he was about to join her. He was on another ship when she was sunk. Also stuck to the album is a letter opener made from a piece of her decking.

Fate: Sunk by U-47, 14 October 1939 at anchor in Scapa Flow.

The irony of her loss is she was in the best condition of the R class battleships in 1939. Shortly after her loss her sister Ramillies arrived in NZ and crowds swarmed over her !

Little did they know the inherent weakness of this type, torpedoes.

The ROYAL OAK is remembered here in Malta because of a number of Maltese personnel lost in her.When I was still a young boy a neighbour who lost her husband on that ship had a photo of her husband and a little photo of the vessel attached. I used to gaze at that photo with a certain interest as my father also had served in the Royal Navy during the war.

Thank you Paul, MattB and PlmouthBoy. Unfortunately a lot of the notes in the album have faded, however looking more closely the date looks more like August 1927.
