It was easy in those days Bob. I was still at school, just wrote to the shipping company telling them of my interest and that I was doing a project on their vessels and next thing I knew I would get a guided tour. I have boxes of brochures and photographs in the loft that all the shipping lines using Tilbury sent me.
Happy days 8-) I think Health & Safety/threat of terrorism has killed all that now though.
