Photo Category: General cargo ships built 1950-1959 (Under 3000gt)
Description:
Launched 8 December 1955 at Rendsburg by Nobiskrug Schiffbau Werft GmbH as hull no. 579 for Sartori & Berger, Kiel. 258 x 417 x 216.5; 1988 gt, 1349 nt; three 12-cylinder Henschel Diesels, 175mm x 210, powering electric motors geared to single screw.

Lengthened 1959: 2854 x 42 x 163.75; 2387 gt, 1629 nt. Later *Piraeus* (1968). Sank 26 March 1971 at 37.02N, 6.16.30E.

Shown October 1961 at Lake Calumet Harbor, Chicago, Illinois. USA. When Sartori & Berger left its partnership in 1961 with A. Kirsten in the Hamburg Chicago Linie, it formed its own Great Lakes-Europe service, Michigan Ocean Line, in competition with Kirsten and Leo Adams, which had taken S & Bs place in Hamburg Chicago, which became Kirsten Lea Linen.

Note the family and dog strolling along the wharf; back then, there was no security whatsoever, and kids like I could stroll onto the docks and take such photos. Times have changed.

Tony - Thanks for the info regarding Hamburg Chicago & Michigan Ocean. I had often wondered the history of the service. Saw many of these ships in Welland Canal when I was young... fond memories SteveH
