Launched 8 December 1955 at Rendsburg by Nobiskrug Schiffbau Werft GmbH as hull no. 579 for Sartori & Berger, Kiel. 258’ x 41’7” x 21’6.5;” 1988 gt, 1349 nt; three 12-cylinder Henschel Diesels, 175mm x 210, powering electric motors geared to single screw.
Lengthened 1959: 285’4” x 42’ x 16’3.75;” 2387 gt, 1629 nt. Later *Piraeus* (1968). Sank 26 March 1971 at 37.02N, 6.16.30E.
Shown October 1961 at Lake Calumet Harbor, Chicago, Illinois. USA. When Sartori & Berger left its partnership in 1961 with A. Kirsten in the Hamburg Chicago Linie, it formed its own Great Lakes-Europe service, Michigan Ocean Line, in competition with Kirsten and Leo Adams, which had taken S & B’s place in Hamburg Chicago, which became Kirsten Lea Linen.
Note the family and dog strolling along the wharf; back then, there was no security whatsoever, and kids like I could stroll onto the docks and take such photos. Times have changed.
