Description:
Follwoing the discussion about the freeboard of modern container ships and modern VLCC's triggered by Lappino's foto of the DSME shipyard, here is revealing one of one of the behemoth's that were once the largest ships in the world. The freeboard of this one is 7,5 meters. The freeboard of the Delos in Vlad's picture is about the same. With 414 meter length, the Bellamya is still longer than the containership. Of course we know that a volume intended cargo ship has different design parameters than a weight designed ship such as a tanker or bulk carrier (Compare the design of a woodchip bulk carrier with that of a regular one).
Unfortunately the times when we could make a comparison shot of this one and a modern ultra large containership are roughly 30 years behind us. Hopefully the containerships will last a bit longer than the tankers.
Here is the Bellamya at the MOT terminal, in its original layout, well before the idea of the LNG terminal took fruition and with no container cranes spoiling the background.
