Fresh out of a refit, the University of Washington's largest research vessel, leased from the US Navy through the UNOLS program, is seen moored at Pier 66 on Seattle's Elliott Bay waterfront.

Thomas G. Thompson (1888-1961) was known for being the first American chemist to study sea water, and also for founding the University of Washington's oceanography program in 1930.
