Though now gainfully employed as one of the most modern and efficient vessels in the fleet, AMERICA'S FINEST initially faced an uncertain future. Per the Jones Act, American flag commercial vessels must contain no more than 1.5% "foreign steel." Unfortunately, the builder misunderstood the interpretation of the law, and included approximately 10% of steel that was of US origin, but bent in the Netherlands, and as a result was found to be violation of the law. After a nearly-2 year saga, Congress passed a waiver that allowed the vessel to legally fish in US waters.
