Description:

Circa 1966, taken from the Danish freighter 'Kirsten Skou'.

Built in 1898 by Marine Industries, Sorel, Port Quebec, Canada for Sincennes McNaughton Towage Company of Montreal, Quebec.
Steel hulled. L x B x D = 70.2' x 20.1 x 10.4.
114 g.t. and 69 n.t., as:
'Mathilda' ( and retained this name her entire career).

Sold in 1959 to McAllister Brothers Towing Co., New York, New York, USA. Operated in the New York area.

In 1969 the tug was retired and 'laid up'.

In 1970 the tug was donated to the South Street Seaport Museum of New York, New York.

On January 25th 1976 the 'Mathilda' sank at her pier in the Seaport, and was subsequently raised by the 'Century' floating derrick.

As the Seaport could not afford the funds to restore and rebuild her, 'Mathilda' was moved to the former Cunard Line Pier 94 for dry storage.

In 1983 McAllister Towing donated the 'Mathilda' to
to the Hudson River Maritime Museum and sent her to her new home on the Rondout, on the deck of the 'Century' derrick, which then placed her on shore at the Museum.
She was restored, and remains as an exhibit, complete with her original steam compound engines.

Scanned from a poor quality, degraded slide.

From the collection of the late Niels Anker Larsen, former Danish Merchant Navy Radio Officer.
