Description:
Launched 11 June 1896 at West Superior, WI, by the American Steel Barge Co. as hull no. 138 for the Bessemer SSCo., Duluth. 390’ x 48 x 27; 3200 gt, 2378 nt; triple expansion steam engine, 22.5”-36-60 x 42, 2000-ihp, by Cleveland SBCo.

Sold into Canadian registry, 1930. Broken up at Hamilton, Ontario, 1966-1967.

Shown May 1965 loading grain on the Calumet River, Chicago, Illinois, USA, while owned by Upper Lakes & St. Lawrence TransCoLtd., Toronto. She was a pure example of a “whaleback” right up until she was scrapped, after plans to turn her into a museum ship at Toronto fell through.

Whoa. I must have accidentally pasted something else in when I corrected the spelling of the name after I posted (why it is "updated"). Her actual IMO number is 517353. This is her LR (*Lloyds Register*) number, which in many early cases would become the IMO number. IMO numbers, as such, did not exist until 1987, so I use the LR numbers. I see no reason in using national documentation numbers ("official numbers") since these are meaningless outside of the country in question.

amazing nostalgic shot, amazing how much smaller they were back then, but i must say, how the heck did you find an IMO # for this one?!?!?
