Hired by Admiralty as Armed Merchant Cruiser on 8 Sept 1939 until 1944.
She was to have been purchased by the Admiralty and converted to Aircraft Carrier in Aug 1942, but this never happened.

Wow Ken, what a memory.
Caernavon Castle is a classic,and the lapwing
was one of the first ships I ever made a note of as a boy!
