GREIFFENFELS was launched on April 15, 1944 as the first standard cargo ship of the large Hansa-C type for the Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft “Hansa” (DDG “Hansa”) at the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij in Amsterdam.

On September 24, 1944, the ship was towed to the Rheinstahl-Nordseewerke shipyard in Emden for further construction but could not be completed before the end of the war.

Confiscated by the Allies, she was delivered by Rheinstahl-Nordseewerke on June 29, 1946 to the Dutch Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaart Maatschappij and put into service as NIJMEGEN.

On May 17, 1950, "Hansa" bought the ship back and had it repaired by AG "Weser" in Bremen and converted from coal to oil firing.

GREIFFENFELS was broken up at Gadani Beach in October 1977.
