Description:

As seen at low tide from main highway. USS LSM56 on the right (Stern) / USS LSM46 on left (Bow).
WWII landing ships located in the Musquash Estuary about 15 kms west of Saint John. After the war, four landing craft were purchased as military surplus by C.N. Wilson, who, at the time owned the Saint John Tug Boat Company and local drydock. They were stripped of their engines and re-purposed as barges that traded along the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine. They were used mainly for the purpose of hauling pulpwood between Grand Manan Island and the mainland. By the early 1960’s the barges had outlived their usefulness and three of them were beached along the river bank in the Musquash Estuary for eventual scrapping. As evidenced today, the demolition process was never completed. One of the four ships was believed to have sunk off Grand Manan.
There is a 16 minute YouTube video further describing how these American LSM’s (Landing Ship Medium), ended up in the Musquash Estuary. At around the 4 minute mark the history surrounding these ships becomes more interesting with drone footage beginning around the 11 minute mark.
I’ve included the youtube link below. (There are several add interuptions).
