Description:

N.J.Pateras & Sons' 1961 Tsurumi (Japan) built bulk carrier ARGONAFTIS is seen berthed at Cardiff towards the end of May 1967 discharging a cargo of timber loaded at Prince Rupert and Vancouver, from where she had sailed on 19th April 1967 for the U.K. She subsequently sailed from Cardiff on 1st June 1967 bound for Hampton Roads, probably to load a cargo of coal.

During 1963 I was very fortunate to be able to visit both ARGONAFTIS and the same owner's 1961 Tamise built bulk carrier THALASSOPOROS (IMO 5357721), in both cases while berthed at Avonmouth discharging grain. I recall both ships being very impressive, helping to inspire my interest in Greek shipping.

In 1978 ARGONAFTIS was sold to Golden Union Shipping, and renamed ORPHEUS, but she was wrecked on 17th June 1979 during a voyage from Piraeus to Yenbo with a cargo of cement.

Scanned from a negative in my collection by the late Des Harris of Penarth
