Description:

Lamport & Holt's 1951 built RUBENS, which was registered in the name of sister company Booth S.S., is seen passing Portishead Point outbound from Avonmouth exactly fifty years ago today, on 8th June 1971.

Built by Wm. Pickergill at Sunderland for Booth Line as CRISPIN, she was transferred within the Vestey Group to Austasia Line in 1953, being renamed MANDOWI, returning to Booth as DUNSTAN in 1966.

The following year, 1967, she was transferred to Lamport & Holt and was renamed RUBENS, but remained in Booth ownership.

In 1973 she was sold and renamed IRINI K. only to arrive at Istanbul on 24.4.74 for breaking which was still in progress in December 1975.

When I joined the MN in June 1971 as a deck boy the Shipping Federation sent me to join the Rubens in Liverpool. I went to sign on the next day but there was chaos on board. Crew screaming at the Captain (Black Bob?) and captain screaming at the crew. I about turned and went back to the 'Pool'. Joined the Ilesha Palm the next day.
