Description:

AKAROA is seen arriving at Avonmouth from Australia exactly fifty years ago today, on 17th July 1971, at the end of her last voyage for Shaw Savill & Albion Line.

She had been built by Harland & Wolff at Belfast in 1959 for Royal Mail Lines and delivered as AMAZON to serve that Company's cargo passenger service from West Coast South America to UK and North Continental ports. She was transferred to Shaw, Savill & Albion, and renamed AKAROA, in 1968.

In 1971 she was sold to Ugland and converted into the vehicle carrier AKARITA, being named HUAL AKARITA for the period of joint service with Hoegh between 1977 and 1980, before arriving at Kaohsiung on 8th January 1982 as AKARITA to be broken up.
