Description:

CARLO CAMELI is seen arriving at Le Havre on September 24th 1964; she had sailed from Mena Ahmadi on August 2nd 1964 bound for Fawley (UK) but was reported on 15th August as having suffered weather damage off the South African coast.

Named after the founder of the Cameli ship owning business in about 1913, at the time of launching, on January 4th 1964, CARLO CAMELI was the largest motor tanker in the world, when most tankers were turbine propelled.

She was sold in 1972 to the New York based Anthony Couloucoundis to trade as PACIFIC SEAHORSE but was laid up at Johore from August 25th 1976 until sent to Kaohsiung for breaking in September 1979.

When sailing as Pacific Seahorse she was obviously on charter to Pertamina, as she also carried the (sub) name Permina Samudra 101. For those wondering, her funnel colours were dark blue, with three horizontal yellow bands towards the top of the funnel. The spare propeller was sitting on the starboard side of the deck halfway between the forecastle and the storage facility and pumps rooms amidships.

I am now informed that the alleged weather damage off the South African Coast simply consisted of the shifting of the 34-ton spare propeller, caused by an oversize wave, promptly refitted in place by the ship's crew.

Interesting bow too - three hawse pipes & three anchors. I do not ever recall seeing that before on any ship.

Tanker Dzhordano Bruno has the same type of the bridge.

Denis, that was indeed the case, and was already done during construction. Some Soviet tankers built in Italy have the same bridge set up.

Looks as if the superstructure was transferred from amidship to aft & raised on those columns.
