The unusual name of this ship is derived from that of the Shoshone woman who guided Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's "Corps of Discovery" expedition in their exploration of the territory acquired in the Louisiana Purchase between 1803-06. Her image was also minted on a $1 coin which was issued in 2000, but which has since been withdrawn from circulation. https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/sacagawea
