An 'old lady' says farewell
The “Heidelberg Express", one of the most modern ships in the fleet when commissioned in 1988, is one of the 16 older vessels that Hapag-Lloyd has gradually taken out of service because they no longer fit in the portfolio.
The “Heidelberg Express”, however, primarily underway in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean in recent years, set sail on its final journey last winter. In February, Captain Felino D’Souza steered the 235-meter-long, 32-meter-wide “old lady” into the Turkish shipyard (in Aliağa, a town on the Aegean Coast in Turkey) – and shut off its propeller for the last time. Then, the 19,300-ton ship was dismantled within four months in a professional and eco-friendly manner.
Former name(s):
- Ville De Verseau (Until 1991 Sep 19)
- Heidelberg Express (Until 1991 Jul 03)
