Description:

KAREL DOORMAN Ex. Belgium Frigate Leopold 1 F930 inbound at Gravesend for the West India Docks.
Feb 23rd 2007

The vessel still has the bridge board LEOPOLD1 and the fleet No. F930 and is flying the Dutch flag, the VTS call sign was KAREL DOORMAN and she is now in the West India Docks.
Presumably she has only just been transferred over to the Dutch navy.

You can look at it this way Ken, you now have 2 vessels with one photo, a positive spin I would say. :-D

Hi Kent,

Yes, that is a good point I guess.

Gentlemen,

Until she's turned over to Belgian naval custody, she retains her Dutch name and flag. That was the case with three ex-Dutch navy frigates transferred to Chile. The 'Almirante Latorre ' name and Chilean pennant number were prominently displayed on a shakedown trip to Norway, but she still flew the Dutch flag and was registered on the port visit as the 'Jacob Van Heemskerck' until she officially commissioned into Chilean service.

Hi DANMAC1

Thanks for your comment, it is all very confusing, as I have said I am not really into naval vessels.
I am not sure if I should update to Leopold 1, she clearly has that name board and pennant number but was recognised by the Port Authority as the Karel Doorman and that is the only reason I uploaded in that name.

Ken

Very nice close up Ken. You don't see this one near our harbours these days.

Hi Ken,

Other way round I believe.

She was the Dutch Karel Doorman but transferred to Belgium as the Leopold 1. Strange that she still has the Dutch flag and call sign with the Belgium name and pennant number.

A second ship was/is being transferred with her, see forum thread for details.

Regards

Bob

Nice photo.

Hi Bob,

I am afraid I am not into naval vessels so can't really give an opinion.
I agree it seems a bit strange, had it not been for the vessel being navigated up the river as as Karel Doorman I would have posted as Leopold 1,however she is now in the West India Dock as Karel Doorman.
All rather weird !!

Ken

We get the occasional naval vessel on the river.
