Description:
"Barcelona" still burning fiercely on 17 May 1988, three days after she was bombed by Iraq at Hormuz 14 May 1988.

"Barcelona", a 235.000 dwt VLCC, was loading oil from "Seawise Giant" at the time. She is down by the bow and leaning to her starboard side after being hit by bombs on the forecastle, in front of the superstructure and on the starboard side aft.

Tragically, the "Barcelona" suffered a massive explosion in front of her superstructure shortly after this picture was taken, and the explosion sank the salvage tug "Scan Partner" (red tug in picture) tragically killing several people, and it also damaged the tug "Ferdinand Verbiest" (small tug lying alongside) and killed two of her crew and the "Beaufort" (the tug lying outside her.

The "Barcelona" eventually sank in about 30 meters of water at Hormuz a few days later and was stuck there for several years before she was removed by salvors Wijsmuller.

I do not know who took the photo but I have had it in a box since 1992 (I worked at the company who bought the wrecked "Seawise Giant" in late 1989) and thought it deserved to be shared 19 years after it was made.

I was Chief Engineer on the Tugboat Beaufort at the time of the blast , we lost 3 crewman, included my Filipino 2 de engineer .
I have a picture of the Scan Partner one day before the blast , with somebody on the bridge . Maybe it is your father , i don't now . I have some more pictures , aswell the sinking of the Scan Partner . Can I send it to your mail adres . I hope you will read this so i can help you . At the time of the blast our tugboat was lying next to the Scan Partner . I refused to stop my engines , even at night , that saved the ship and our lives .

So sorry to hear that. Your father was a hero, putting himself in harms way to save crew, ships and cargo.

It seems to be last picture of my father. He was killed on Scan Partner...
