Description:
"Barcelona" sunk at Hormuz after she was bombed by Iraq on 14 May 1988.
"Barcelona", a 235.000 dwt VLCC, was loading oil from "Seawise Giant" at the time. Tragically, the "Barcelona" suffered a massive explosion in front of her superstructure on 17 May 1988 (the results are evident in the picture), and the explosion sank the salvage tug "Scan Partner" killing several people, and it also damaged the tugs "Ferdinand Verbiest" and "Beaufort".
The "Barcelona" sank in about 30 meters of water at Hormuz a few days later and was stuck there for several years before she was removed by salvors Wijsmuller.
I do not know who took the photo but I have had it in a box since 1992 (I worked at the company who bought the wrecked "Seawise Giant" in late 1989) and thought it deserved to be shared 19 years after it was made. Thank you to the unknown photographer.
