Partly obscured by reflections from the aircraft window, the wreck of the British Crown lies on the beach at Umm Said in Qatar in 1976. On the 20th of August, 1966, while she was loading, number 5, 6 and 7 tanks exploded causing the ship to eventually become a total loss. The centrecastle was totally destroyed. In all 13 officers and 6 crew lost their lives. Thanks to Ken for the information.

Just came across this terribly sad photo. I recall that the Master and C/O both had very lucky escapes: the former was in his cabin when she exploded and was propelled outwards, landing in the sea some way away, similarly the C/O was on deck at the time and was blown clear.
