The 5th Blue Funnel ship to bear the name "Dardanus" had an incredible early career. Completed in 1940, she was seized by Germany and sailed as "Meersberg" for Hamburg-Amerika Line. She later became a submarine depot ship and began to be converted to a commerce raider, but never sailed as such. In 1945 she was recovered and renamed "Empire Humber" until she was delivered to her intended owners, Glen Line 6 years late in 1946. She sailed as "Glengarry" until August 1970, when she was transferred to Ocean Steamship Company as "Dardanus." She reverted to Glen Line as "Glengarry" in January 1971 for her demolition voyage. The photograph of her in Liverpool's Gladstone Dock was taken during her brief appearance as a "bluey."

I have only today noticed this photograph - so mine taken at Avonmouth was not unique! - but please see a summary of the full wartime history of the ship appended to my photograph
