This is the waste disposal vessel "Alex II" (IMO 6619580) owned by Marika Investments of Lagos Nigeria and flying the Hoduras flag (according to Equasis). This vessel was built in 1966 by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd of Dundee, Scotland as the "Newham" for the Greater London Council, later taken over by Thames Water Authority. She was one of a fleet of vessels employed in taking sludge from two large London sewage works for dumping at sea out in the Thames Estuary. This practice was discontinued following pressure from environmentalists such as Greenpeace. The vessels were loaded in a manner similar to that of an oil tanker but discharging was accomplished by opening valves which allowed the sludge to drop out through gravity via pipes leading through the ship's bottom. "Newham" was one of three sister vessels named after new London boroughs created around the time the ships were built. The others were "Bexley" and "Hounslow", they were joined later by a larger, different-design vessel named "Thames"
