WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
It is so tragic to see the photographs of this fine ship so neglected over the years. I am surprised that with such an excellent record of preserving ships from which we in the UK could take a lesson, the US has chosen not to recognise this icon of their Merchant Navy.
My introduction to her was when I took this shot on the wettest day imaginable as she pulled out of the Ocean Dock in Southampton in March 1965.
I saw her quite a few times after that but never close enough to get another photo.

In case you haven't seen it - here is a 'Shared Link' to the Microsoft Virtual Earth program and a "Bird's Eye View" of what she looks like today. SS UNITED STATES in Philadelphia
You can close the Welcome and navigation windows for a full screen shot.
Sure would like to think that there is a future for this Grand Old Lady... but these days it's hard to imagine a cost effective scenario that would restore her dignity. Wishful thinking ?
Thank You Paul, for another fine shot of her.
