Description:
Ex Yugoslav navy flagship Galeb after second reconstruction in 1959. Built 1938 in Genova, Italy as Ramb III for Italian company R.A.M.B. (Regia Azienda Monopolio Banane)it was one of the four sisterships for transport of bananas. During WW2 used as Italian auxiliary cruiser (1940-1943), later under German Kriegsmarine (1943-1944)as minelayer Kiebitz operating in the Adriatic sea. Sunk 5.11.1944 in the port of Rijeka, Croatia after bombardment of US air forces. Rescued 12.03.1948 from the Yugoslav company Brodospas and towed to shipyard Uljanik Pula where it was reconstructed in 1953 into navy training ship. Used also as presidential ship. Yugoslav president Tito went on the first trip in 1953 to Great Britain. After that Tito visited 18 different countries and many heads of the states were guests on board. After 1992 the destiny of the ship was uncertain and in year 2000 it was towed to a shipyard near Rijeka where it is still today. There are some intentions to convert it into museum ship.
